Dear Participants of 2nd IESO Conference for IESO and
Organizing Committee members for 1st IESO
We are very glad to report the results of the 2nd IESO conference held at Chosun University, Gwangju, Korea on 12th and 13th of April, 2007 as follows. If you have comments or opinions, please contact Moo Young SONG, or Chan-Jong Kim.
(1) Participants for 2nd Conference on IESO included 20 Korean organizing committee members and 11 foreign colleagues: Amarjargal Baatar (Mongol), Miguel Cano (Philippines), Chun-Yen Chang (Taiwan), Hsieh-Hai Fu (Taiwan), Ken-ichiro Hisada (Japan), Yoshisuke Kumano (Japan), Teh-Ching Liu (Taiwan), Sharon Locke (U.S.), Ian McKay (South Africa), Chandra Poudyal (Nepal), Shankar (India). Sylke Hlawatsch (Germany) and Jose Selles-Martinez (Argentina) could not participate in this conference, but they sent materials to be referred to and they were very helpful. Korean participants were Moo Young SONG, Chan-Jong Kim, Chang Zin Lee, Gong Soo Chung, Jae Bok Kyung, Siek Hyung, Young Sin Park, In Hyun Shin, Hyonyong Lee, Jung Yul Kim, Soo In Park, Yeo Sang Kim, Kyu Seong Cho, Gook Young Ju, Phil Seok Oh, Myung Kyung Shin, Kee Young Lee and more.
(2) The Members of Local Organizing Committee presented about the preparation of major events of IESO; 1st IESO preparation (Jae Bok Kyung), written test (Siek Hyung), practical test (Gong Soo Chung), and field investigation (Chang-Zin Lee & Young Shin Park). After discussion it was decided that written and practical tests results will be summed and medals will be awarded for the participants with high scores.
(3) Field trip investigation will be excluded from individual competition and become a cooperation activity with international teams. Each international team for field investigation consists of students from every different country. Presentation of each countries' geology and characteristics will also be another event for promote mutual understanding and friendship.
(4) The weight between written and practical tests for competition will be decided by host country, depending on its content, but most possibility is 7:3 or 8:2 between written and practical ones.
(5) In the competition of written and practical test, the weight among content domains of Earth science is 40:30:20:10; corresponding to Geosphere: Atmosphere: Astronomy: Hydrosphere, respectively.
(6) The Korean Colleagues in charge of will receive materials related to each test (investigation) from international colleagues two months in advance. Then, International juries will review, modify, or develop another test items during the first one and half days of IESO, and finally they will make decision the finalized test items the night before the test day. English and other language will be used at the same time, but English will be preferred on practical test.
(7) We had much discussion about evaluation and assessment of test items. To reduce expected difficulties during scoring, it is recommended that written test will be developed to require answers with drawings or signs and very limited writings. The standard evaluation of the English-translated answer sheet will be carried out by the principal creator of the each question item. The principal question item creator will be assisted by all other international juries and other Korean assistants. The answer sheets of each student participated will be scored or graded by international juries from each own country and the score will be moderated among international juries from other countries.
(8) The 2nd IESO will be held in Philippines in 2008 and the 3rd IESO will in Taiwan in 2009. Therefore, it is very critical to make the 1st IESO successful first of all, which is very influential to the following ones.
(9) At this time, 13 different countries delivered their message of participating in 1st IESO in October 2007, and at least 8 countries will participate in this IESO.
(10) All participants agreed that IESO is the exemplary international event representing the area of Earth science, and IESO is very important to promote Earth science education at all levels globally. All participants also agreed that they would do their best to send own national delegates to the 1st IESO in October 2007 in Daegu Metropolitan City.
Besides conclusions in the above, we are communicating each other electronically, and we Koreans are making the maximum efforts for 1st IESO.
Thank you for your contribution and cooperation.
